It’s the Little Things

You may do great and noble deeds.
Your name may be inscribed upon the pages of history.
But it’s the little things that make the man, my son.

Your patience with a child,
your respect for those beneath and above you;
the unremarked, unseen acts of charity.
The small choices, quickly made from a righteous heart.
The brief prayer of thanksgiving and praise
scattered like punctuation through your day.

These little things the world at large may not notice or applaud.
But they make the man, my son.
And they will be written in a book that outlasts
the mightiest works of which the world can boast.

Strive for great deeds, if you must.
But along the way don’t forget to touch
to smile
to see with clear eyes and a noble heart.
Then, whether or not you become famous,
you will be loved for the little things, my son.
