THE RIVER

Last night I dreamed I walked beside a river;

it’s water flowing restless to the sea.

I dipped my glass into the sparkling water

and held it for my little boy to see.

“Can you tell me now from where I took this water?

Is the river less because my glass is full?”

He shook his head and asked why it mattered.

I sat him down and held him close and warm.

“The river’s like a mother’s love,” I told him.

“Sometimes restless, but flowing full and wide.

Each child can dip his glass within it;

drink his fill and never find it dry.”

God is like that river

with water deep and pure for you and me.

No matter how many will drink of His love,

His love will flow full and flow free.

Some question how God could leave Heaven

while He walked as a man here on earth;

How God could keep everything working

And still show His infinite worth.

But God is more than man’s measure.

His glory is more than our gaze.

He is timeless you see, and He holds you and me

In hands full of infinite days!
